Essential Lawn and Garden Tools

About Garden Tools. If you are just starting to build your first garden from scratch, some of the garden tools' names may sound funny to you. However, a gardener with experience knows the importance of these tools. Choosing the right tool is important. Of course every type of a tool is only good to serve a certain type of function. I'd like to briefly overview each gardening tool below and then maybe we will go into more detail, practical uses and tips. I'd like to start with the least obvious gardening tool called the lawn aerator shoes.

Lawn Aerator Shoes

Turf grass is one of the only plants in our landscaping that we walk on. As a result, the soil turf underneath becomes hard-compacted. To provide the soil with more air and water, lawn aeration shoes may be used. This cheaply priced tool is a great asset for "done in one noon" scale garden jobs. Lawn aerator shoes is a garden tool suitable for small-size lawn or yard aeration work. There is a rumor that lawn aerator shoes are not very effective. However, this really depends on how much of a soil air problem you have and the solution will require a different type of tool in each case. Considering you step on your lawn often (while watering or mowing it, or when your kids play in the lawn in the summer) lawn aerating shoes may not be of great help. If, on the other hand, the soil underneath your lawn is not very compact, the shoes can be used while mowing the lawn, since you would be stepping on it anyway.

Garden Cultivator

A small garden cultivator is also known as a rotory tiller. Garden Cultivators are powered by a small engine and are operated by one person walking behind. Some of the functions of garden cultivators include mixing the soil turf with manure and soil fertilization in preparation for planting. These machines convert soil lumps to what is known as tilth. A garden cultivator is like a miniature combine harvester with parts that can be replaced. Garden cultivators have interchangeable attachment parts used to plough the soil or cut vegetation. They can be used in small to medium-sized lawns without the expense of using a tractor-mounted tiller.

Garden Fork

A garden fork, also known as spading fork, digging fork or graip is a gardening tool with three or four tines. It is a miniature, hand-held pitchfork device that allows gardeners to control the soil. This tool is mainly used for loosening soil, however it has several other advantages over other tools such as the spade. It is not easily stopped by stones, break up clods and it will not cut through plant roots The garden fork's common function is lifting and turning over soil in tightly compacted areas that are created by rain or walking. A smaller garden fork with shorter and thinner tines is known as a border fork or ladies' fork. Such fork is used for lighter work.

Hedge Trimmer

A hedge trimmer is a gardening tool used to cut off excess leaves, tree branches or bush branches that are sticking out of the hedge. A hedge is a wall of trees or bushes usually trimmed from the top and the sides to form a wall-like structure. Some hedges are decorative, and others serve a specific function. These structures can protect homes from a nearby golf field, or decorate a home's driveway or backyard lawn. Hedges are also used as tree fences separating yours and your neighbor's yards in a less offensive way. Hedge trimmers help to maintain hedges and ensure that they stay visually appealing and neat.

Compost Bins

Compost bins are some of the most efficient models for compost generation, production and storage. One of the greatest things about compost bins is that many gardeners will build them themselves following simple plans. There is plenty of material on how to build your own compost bins on the Internet, all free of charge. The amount of money one should expect to spend to aquire all the needed materials is between $10 to $50 depending on the size and type of your bin. Some of the different types of compost bins are worm compost bins, wooden compost bin, portable bins and wire mesh based bins, the latter are the quickest and least expensive to construct.

Push Reel Lawn Mowers

If you like to save money at expense of exerting more physical power to maintain your lawn, reel mowers are an excellent way to save gas. No doubt, for those who like to stay in shape, a manual reel lawn mower that you have to push in front of you will help to burn some calories because it appears to also be a great exercise. You know what it feels like when you are trying to enjoy a football game on your tv set at the moment your neighbor decided to mow his or her lawn. And so, another advantage of using reel mowers over modern electric or gas-powered lawn mowers is noise elimination. Push reel mowers are so quiet that they allow you (and your neighbors) to listen to the birds sing while mowing the lawn. There are several popular American lawn mower brands available such as Gilmour, Toro, Jacobsen, Tru Cut, Brill, Amish Gang, McLane and Scotts that you can look into. Lawn mowers come in different sizes that depend on the size of the blade, that are commonly 14, 15, 16, 20 or 21 inch wide. Note that some models also come with grass catchers, and you have to make the decision about what kind you would like. Another great advantage of push reel lawn mowers over gas-powered ones is that it is perfectly fine to buy used ones as only the blade and wheels need maintenance. Hand push mowers are a cheaper alternative mainly because a gas-powered lawn mower requires periodic oil changes and engine maintenance. The only maintenance concern with a push mower is blade sharpening and storing it away from children.

Rotary Tiller Cultivator

A rotary tiller, also known as a rototiller, rotovator, rotary hoe, rotary plough, rotary plow or power tiller is a gas-powered cultivator. There are at least two main types of rotary tillers. A self-properlled tiller or the kind that is attached to the back of a two-wheel tractor or a four-wheel tractor.

A small rotary hoe used for domestic gardens is known by the trademark Rototiller. Another one, made by the Howard Group, is known as the Rotovator. Rototillers are popular among home gardeners who desire to grow large vegetable gardens. The garden should be tilled a few times before planting each crop. A small rototiller is usually powered by a 1 to 5 hoursepower petrol engine, or .8 to 3.5 kilowatts one. It is pushed forward by the rotating tines and its wheels do not excert power over the ground, but rather act to move the weight of the machine forward. These are considered mini garden roto tillers because they can be used by one person. Another name for this tool is simply Garden Cultivator.

Scythe

A skythe is one of the most symbolic gardening tools. Traditionally a scythe is known as an agricultural hand tool for mowing grass and reaping crops. This tool consists of two parts, the long wooden shaft (called snaith, snath, snathe or sned). The original snaith is thought to be straight, or with a slight S-curve, however more sophisticated ones are usually curved in 3 dimensions, which allows the mower to stand more upright. The snaith has one or two handles attached to it, usually located at a perpendicular angle to each other. These handles allow leverage to be exerted so it is possible to cut even the strongest and tallest grass.
